Floating Shelves
One of the most transformative ways to update your built-in bar area is to install floating shelves or bistro shelving. Floating shelves come in a variety of compositions. Below are photos from one of our most recent projects by our talented designer Caty DeLaigle. It’s called “Bright Open Kitchen with Built-In Bar” and has gorgeous white oak floating wood shelves.
Bistro Shelves
Bistro shelves are another great option if you want open shelving. Usually made of metal, these aesthetically pleasing shelves create a more industrial modern look for your space. Below are images from a vignette in our Lake Oconee showroom, featuring stunning gold and glass bistro shelves, which brings us to a simpler bar refresh — updating your barware! This is an easy way to make your bar feel brand new with some fresh glasses, linen cocktail napkins, and other beautiful items you wish to display.
Bar Lighting
Installing open shelves creates the perfect spot to house all your gorgeous barware, cocktail materials, recipe books, and décor. Another way to elevate your built-in bar’s open shelving is to install lighted bar shelves to create the perfect spotlight in your beautiful space. Open-lighted shelves enhance ambiance, further elevating this lovely focal point in your bar, as well as a space for you to add personal items to showcase your style.
Backsplash
If you are starting from scratch or remodeling your current bar, selecting a backsplash is another way to transform the space with your own personal flare. You might consider choosing a simpler backsplash if you install open shelves to keep the focus on the curated décor. Or, as shown above with the bistro shelves, a statement backsplash can further elevate the focal point of your bar. Checkout our backsplash gallery for more inspiration for your bar space!
If you choose to install built-in cabinets and have a smaller area for a backsplash, choosing one that catches the eye and makes a bigger impact in a smaller area may be the way to go. Below are images from a project our talented designer Mallory Cash created in partnership with Notre Maison Design & Renovations called “Sophisticated Marble Wet Bar.” This space shows how a small area can make a big impact with a statement backsplash, like antiqued mirrored tiles as well as cabinet lighting to make the backsplash pop. This backsplash further elevates this otherwise gorgeous space to be a sophisticated spot to stop and enjoy a beverage after a long week. Or gather your friends for celebration!
Built-In Cabinets
This sophisticated marble wet bar is also a great example of another built-in bar update — white oak built-in cabinets that boast natural beauty. If keeping open shelves organized and tidy isn’t your thing, built-in cabinets are a great option for your bar area. You can still make a statement with built-in cabinets, as shown in this project with geometric detailing that catches your eye with subtle details.
You may wish to rotate your barware to keep things interesting, so installing built-in drawers and extra cabinet space may be something to consider. If so, cabinet extras, such as glass cabinet inserts, are a great option so you have a space to display selected items, while leaving other spaces to keep the rest of your beautiful barware tucked away.
This project shown above, “Built-In Bar with Dark Cabinetry & Custom Glass,” by our talented designer Lindsay Cooper is a great example of having the best of both worlds. It has a spot to display your barware behind glass cabinet inserts as well as extra surrounding cabinet space to keep other items neatly stored.
So that you can continue to be the “hostess with the mostest” this summer, these curated tips, small and large, will transform your built-in bar. Floating shelves, bistro shelves, backsplash, and cabinetry are just a few ways to update your built-in bar. One (or all) of these design elements can completely transform a room, leaving you with a refreshed space to begin entertaining your guests for years to come.
